How to choose a flooring colour
Some points to note:
Some things to look out for:
Choosing the right colour of the carpet can be critical as it ties together many other aspects of the design like the paint colour, furniture, lighting and decor. This is where you can help using Light Reflectance Value (or LRV for short) to select the best option.
For designers or home owners coordinating colours or in creating the correct mood for a room e.g., corporate branding colours in the decor of an office, a darker more relaxing environment in a Spa versus a bright and airy atmosphere in a classroom, the LRV of a product helps them achieve their goal. It also helps businesses, schools, and homes stay energy efficient and save on energy costs - choosing a reflective colour with a higher LRV probably will not require as much lighting or air conditioning.
Brightness is also ergonomically helpful, and this is particularly true of windowless spaces in commercial interiors, where maximising light is a huge benefit to workers.
Designers who need to create designs that support the disabled or visually impaired should use high percentage LRV products. The Americans with Disability Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) recommends a 70% or higher LRV for those with impaired vision.
- The lighter the carpet or vinyl the brighter the room will be. The room will also feel more spacious. Less light is required to brighten the room.
- The darker the carpet or vinyl the more it will hide certain soiling/staining issues. Darker carpets can greatly assist with "toning" down a room if the light source and room size is too much or too large.
- The Lighter the carpet the more cleaning maintenance is required to maintain the visual appeal, as it will show soiling/staining more frequently.
- The darker carpet will show lighter colour soiling like dust or lint from clothes. More light is needed to brighten the room, if required.
